Here are some links to CLPNBC resources and external learning resources that registrants may find useful for their continuing professional development.

CLPNBC e-Learning Courses

1. Learning to Learn Tutorial – this flash video tutorial tells you why ongoing professional development activities are important; how to assess, plan and evaluate your learning activities; and provides many suggestions on how to make your learning most effective and successful. A self-test quiz is included. (Approximately 20 minutes excluding the quiz).

2. Patient Assessment e-Learning Course – this is an e-Learning version of the "Patient Assessment Self-Assessment Tool" document produced and distributed by CLPNBC. Some 15 separate modules are planned.

Workplace Health and Safety 

Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry has some excellent e-Learning modules on workplace health and safety. These high-end, video-based modules cover the following topics:

    • Backs and Bums: Applying Basic Ergonics
  • Impairment and Workplace Health and Safety
  • Workplace Health and Safety for Schools
  • Recognizing Workplace Hazards - See it Again for the First Time
  • Shiftwork and Fatigue
  • Hazard Assessment and Control
  • Incident Investigation

Office Ergonomics

This e-Learning course is an excellent example of how online learning can be engaging and interactive rather than passive. This module provides useful tips and advice for individuals who  regularly work at a computer workstation. (Created by Prometheus Training Corporation). 

U.S. National Library of Medicine

The NLM has a huge number of well-done interactive health education tutorials. Using animated graphics, each tutorial explains a procedure or condition in easy-to-understand language. There are 4 categories of online tutorials:

  • Diseases and Conditions: 103 tutorials on such topics as acne, angina, arthritis, fractures and sprains, menopause, warts and much more.
  • Tests and Diagnostics Procedures: 25 tutorials on such topics as barium enama, bone densitometry, breast lumps, bronchoscopy, colonscopy, colposcopy, CT scan and more.
  • Surgery and Treatment Procedures: 35 tutorials on such topics as aorto-bifemoral bypass, cardiac rehabilitation, carotid endarterectomy, carpal tunnel syndrome, chemotherapy, etc.
  • Prevention and Wellness: 8 tutorials on such topics as back exercises, coumadin, exercising for a health heart, managing cholesterol, managing stress and more.  

Nursing

The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) has a Learning Centre on their website. The nursing e-Learning modules that are available include:

  • Consent

  • Infection Prevention and Control
  • Medication
  • Professional Standards

  • Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship
  • Utilization of RNs and RPNs

Edheads.org has several interactive virtual surgery modules that demonstrate what can be done to teach certain procedures. These include:
